The 2017 Charter Oak High School Senior Awards took place Monday for graduating seniors obtaining honors from Charter Oak High School and earning scholarships from colleges and universities.

A major Senior award that was announced was the Gold Key Award, which was presented by Superintendent Mike Hendricks to William Vest, who is also apart of the Hacienda League Five. William will also attend Cal State Fullerton in the fall. William’s name came up multiple times.  In addition to the Gold Key, William was recognized for having a 3.8 GPA or above and awarded the Lorraine M. and Fred L. Abel Memorial Scholarship award. It was a big night for William.

One award that is difficult to earn is the attendance award. The perfect attendance award is for seniors who have not missed a day of school since their freshman year. To go to school and not miss a day for four years is really impressive, and only two students earned this award: Alison Ghafari and Jaryd Pattinson Sparkman. This award is a pretty big deal.

The Quill and Scroll award was presented by our very own Mrs. Margo Wilcox, and this award went to three of my classmates. Vanessa Morales, Selena Morentin and Stephen Pearson received blue and gold cords for wear at graduation.

Charter Oak takes a lot of pride in their athletics, and because I have been a part of the football program for two years, I understand how much football means to the school, though students from various sports were recognized. Marissa Chavez and William Vest were the Foothill-Citrus Athletic Directors Association Honorees, and Bret Clemetson and Jenna Dohy were given the CIF State Fall Spirit of Sport Award.

The Hacienda League Five, the top five scholar-athletes, were honored a few months ago at the CIF Luncheon. The top five athletes were Brian Casteel, Marissa Chavez, Bret Clemetson, Katie Fugit and William Vest. They were also honored again last night.

The two big athletic awards announced were the Charter Oak High School Athlete of the Year Awards. Brian Casteel took home the Male Athlete of the Year Award. Brian was most definitely the best football player this year, and many people in the area name him the best football player in the San Gabriel Valley. Brian will also be attending the University Of Arizona. Katie Fugit was named Female Athlete of the Year. She swims and plays water polo, and she will be attending Cal Baptist on a scholarship to play water polo.

It was a special night for all graduating seniors and a night they will all remember. Congratulations to the winners for all their hard work throughout  these four years of high school and good luck to all the graduating seniors as they start their new journey.
