During the first week of April, our Business, Education, and Technology Academy, BETA, team took a big win in UCLA’s annual business plan competition. “Not only did they get first in their category, but first overall-obtaining the highest total score from all schools competing and taking home a $1,000 cash prize,” said Mrs. Camille Strycula, business teacher. The judges were so impressed that they emailed Mrs. Strycula to let her know how well the students had done.

BETA’s team competed with the Vie Health window that was held at the beginning of the semester and were able to come home with a big prize. Beta wrote a business plan on Vie Health business, which consisted of selling healthy snack food on campus. They took “ It took all year to complete and everyone in class participated,” said Cole Light, senior.

After finishing the project, four representatives from the class–seniors Ryan Quijas, Gezel Altareh, and Cole Light, and junior Renea Dela Pena–memorized a ten minute presentation for the judges. “The win was huge. We got overall out of over 60 different teams competing,” said the representatives.

The BETA team earned $1,000 for their program and their hard work paid off. The process was not easy to complete the project. Cole Light said he was thankful that he had great classmates to work with.

With the prize money, they will now have better opportunities next year. BETA is excited for next year and looking forward to progressing in their work.

Charter Oak is very proud of the Beta Team’s. This win gives them recognition around the school district. Hopefully it will lead to exceptional achievements in the future. Future BETA students have big shoes to fill, but with all the hard work, they should have  no problem taking home another win in the 2017-2018 school year.
