After 36 years in the district and 32 years at Charter Oak, Mrs. Anne Turner is retiring. In her years at COHS, she has taught three levels of chemistry: CP, Honors and IB. After teaching thousands of students, she is ready for a well deserved retirement.

During retirement, Mrs. Turner plans to become more involved with social justice through her church and would like to engage in more creative projects. Her daughter is an elementary school teacher, and Mrs. Turner may help out during the week.

Her favorite teaching moments have been when IB Chemistry students come back from an exam and say, “Oh, it wasn’t that bad.”  She loved to work with students in activities, especially at a Sadie Hawkins dance, and creating fun, memorable experiences at Charter Oak.

Angela Prince, sophomore Honors Chemistry student, said, “I am glad I had Mrs. Turner as a teacher. She made learning chemistry fun and entertaining. I loved the demos, jokes and relaxed atmosphere of the class.”

Mrs. Turner decided to become a teacher during her twenties when she got a job during the summer and worked with elementary kids. She “had a blast.” The next year, she worked with kindergarteners and fell in love with teaching.  Mrs. Turner had a lot of fun designing activities for the children.

During the week, she worked at a pharmacy, but eventually dreaded coming to work. Mrs. Turner said, “I made the drastic change from thinking of becoming a pharmacist and switching to teaching.” She has never regretted the decision and loves teaching.

Mrs. Turner has also had a profound impact on her coworkers. Ms. Pat Foy, biology and environmental systems teacher, said, “Mrs. Turner has been a vital part of the department as we move towards and implement educational reforms. It’s been a joy to work with her, and I am going to miss her very much. She is very kind and considerate, and is always willing to help.”

As some last advice to her students, Mrs. Turner said, “Over the years, they have kept me young, and I really appreciate that.  They have made me keep out of my head and think more about others.” She said that if she had not been a teacher, she wouldn’t be who she was today.

Mrs. Turner is a great teacher who will be missed by students and her coworkers.  Students wish her the best of luck inn this new step of her life and will deeply miss her punny chemistry jokes during class. Charter Oak wishes her the best during her retirement.
