Fri., May 5, and Sat., May 6, the American Sign Language classes had a show where they signed to different songs from different time periods. This is the second year the ASL class has performed, and everyone who involved enjoyed participating.

The main characters, Bill and Ted, must do a project in school about the deaf community. To fulfill this project, they decide to take their time machine back in time and bring deaf people from each era. A few songs included in the show were “Love Shack,”  “Summer Lovin’,” “Run The World,” “Bye Bye Bye,” “I Feel Pretty,” “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” and “Girlfriend.”

As a student in the audience, I enjoyed watching the show. It was nice to see students appreciate the deaf community and send a message to people. In the show they made sure to say that “deaf people are not embarrassed of not being able to hear. They enjoy their language and love themselves for who they are.” It was a show that was well appreciated. Those who were in it wanted to be, and it showed within their performance.

Valerie Carmona, senior, said, “The ASL show is something I’ve looked forward, too, and it is a cool experience to show what we have learned in class with those who do not take the class.  Also I think it is a cool experience to watch the show even though you may not understand the language. It is pretty awesome to watch”.

Many people who take the class like doing the show and with the new teacher, Mrs. Summer Nixon, they were able to put on an entertaining show.

Valerie also said “ It was a great experience. I would definitely do it again if i could. I enjoyed meeting people that know the same language I do, and the show turned out great.”

The show is held annually in the spring, and if you did not have the opportunity to attend this year, plan to go next year. You will enjoy the show.
