On Jan. 8,  just eight days into the new year, the well known retail store H&M released photos of their new clothing items on their online website, featuring a young black child wearing a green hoodie that read “Coolest Monkey in the Jungle,” which sparked a great deal of controversy on social media and with celebrities.

People took to Twitter to describe their anger and frustration about the photo and the company. The Weeknd, famous singer and songwriter, tweeted about the controversy: “Woke up this morning shocked and embarrassed by this photo. I’m deeply offended and will not be working with @hm anymore…”

G-Eazy, a rapper who was working on a collection of menswear with H&M, stated, “After seeing the disturbing image yesterday my excitement over our global campaign quickly evaporated, and I’ve decided at this time our partnership needs to end.”

As more and more comments were made by angry customers and associates, H&M released an apology reading, “We sincerely apologize for offending people with this image of a printed hooded top. The image has been removed from all online channels and the product will not be for sale in the United States.”

This apology was not enough for people as the hoodie was still being sold on its UK site. That led to H&M apologizing yet again with an even longer statement: “Our position is simple and unequivocal – we have got this wrong and we are deeply sorry.” H&M then goes on to say, “We clearly haven’t come far enough. We agree with all the criticism that this has generated – we have got this wrong and we agree that, even if unintentional, passive or casual racism needs to be eradicated wherever it exists.”

H&M’s second apology didn’t seem to work either because a few days later on Jan.13, protesters trashed an H&M store in South Africa out of rage. This caused waves all over social media. People claimed that trashing a store was way out of line and that they were overreacting. Others said that if they could have been there, they would have done worse damage.

Terry Mango, the mother of Liam Mango, the boy who modeled the “Coolest Monkey in the Jungle” sweatshirt, spoke out saying, “I am the mom, and this is one of the hundreds of outfits my son had modeled. Stop crying wolf, and get over it.”

Mango then told BBC that she does not think H&M has “a racist agenda.”

The fire died down on H&M a couple days later, but there are still many people who are angered by this incident.
