Bill Cosby is a name that has been cherished in the households of America since the early 70s. The comedian started off doing stand-up comedy and then went on to create, produce, and host the Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids show. He then landed his own sitcom, which he is most famous for, The Cosby Show, that aired in the mid-80’s and lasted until 1992. The show focused on a middle class African American family, the Huxtables, living in Brooklyn Heights. Cosby played the patriarch of the family, Cliff Huxtable, the loving husband and father, which is how he earned his nickname “America’s Dad”.

Cosby was loved and cherished by all until March 27, 2015, when a news conference was held by Sunni Wells, who accused Cosby of molesting her not once but twice in 1965. The world was shocked by this accusation against a man who was famous for his family values and his heartwarming personality. No one could believe it at first, until a second accuser, Kristina Ruehli, came out. Ruehli claimed that Cosby raped her in 1966 with a story similar to Wells. Many were reluctant to believe that Cosby was guilty of any of this, but by December 30, 2015, 43 more women had spoken out against Cosby.

His case then begins in Pennsylvania, where he was first charged for assaulting a woman outside his home in 2004. During this time, there was enough evidence against Cosby to bring him to trial. He was tried on three sex counts, which can result up to 10 years in prison if found guilty. Then, a defamation lawsuit against Cosby and one of his accusers was given the right to proceed, adding on to the accusations of Cosby’s already heavy load.

By mid-2016, Cosby had 58 accusers. He is in failing health and is nearly blind. People closest to Cosby still come to his defense. “But you can’t defend yourself in that capacity, you know what I’m sayin’? You just have to let facts be facts, and so on and so forth … none of this seems fair. It’s just unfortunate because he’s so beloved to so many people,” says Cee Lo Green.

Keshia Knight Pulliam, co-star of The Cosby Show, led him into the courtroom, showing her support for the man who played her father for years. A handful of his comedian actors showed up to support their old friend by standing for one of the cases or escorting him in the courtroom.

As the first trial came to an end, just like the rest of the world, the jurors were torn on what to believe and could not reach a verdict. Cosby’s defense team demanded a mistrial be called. This is just a prime example of the what the world is feeling about this beloved actor…even a jury does not know what to believe.

However, a retrial is currently underway. A week before the retrial, Cosby’s defense team asked the judge to recuse himself from the case since his wife is a social worker who advocates for sexual assault victims. The judge denied the claims that his wife’s work has influenced him in anyway.

For the retrial, Cosby hired a new lawyer, Tom Mesereau, to defend him. Mesereau has made it known that he will take an aggressive strategy when it comes to defending Mr. Cosby. When it came to closing arguments on Tuesday, prosecutor Kristen Feden lashed out at Cosby, who appeared to be laughing and smiling when prosecution was making its argument.

With the retrial coming up, victims have had the grueling experience of reliving past experiences, and the jury will be under more pressure to come to a decision.

The world continues to wonder if the man they once looked up to was something evil all along.

On Thursday, April 26, the jury found Cosby guilty on all three charges of aggravated indecent assault. THe judge did not set a sentencing date, but Cosby, who could appeal, could be sentenced for up to ten years for each count.
