Beginning at 6 pm on May 15 the CO multi-purpose room was open for family and friends to gather in celebration of the underclassmen who achieved significant accomplishments this 2017-18 school year.

Mr. Chris Sweet, vice principal, welcomed those who gathered and then proceeded to introduce the presenter for the Floyd Myrick Awards, Mr. John E. Brittain IV of Covina Rotary. He explained this award is presented to freshman who have overcome a significant obstacle. Each department elected a freshman students who they believed were entitled to this award. Mr. Chris Long nominated Natalie Olivia for art, and Mr. Lance Gerodias elected Derrick Canoy for Business. Mr Roger Graziani felt Diego Casas deserved the recognition for drama while Mr. Scott Higuera named Jena Ornelas for English. Joshua Flores was named by Mrs. Summer Nixon for foreign language, and Mr. Greg Zampiello elected Kaleb Gaul for mathematics. Mrs. Rebecca Portnoy thought  Maribel Fuentes was deserving for music; Mr. Jon Cowper elected Randy Angulo for physical education. While Mr. Steve Smith named Devin Lojero for science, Mrs. Val Carri elected Ayah Abualhawa for special programs, and Mr. Luis Felix awarded Claudia Flores for vocational technology.

While Mr. Brittain was nervous while presenting, he did a good job about keeping the audience interested and engaged while reading the names of the freshman students.

The next award that was presented was the “Most Outstanding Student” award. This was given to one sophomore and one junior who stood out in each department. Mr. Chris Long awarded sophomore Jordan Florez and junior Clarissa Jara in the art department. Mr. Lance Gerrodias presented the award for business to sophomore Andranik Mkrtchyan and junior Nadia Jokiman. For drama, Mr. Roger Graziani named Blake Drinkenburg. sophormore, and Alexandra Martinez, juniors, for directing winning performances in the DTASC competitions and outstanding contribution to the drama department. In the English department Mrs. Lisa Dettelbach presented the sophomore award to Cecilia Moro while Angela  Prince received the junior award from Mrs. Margo Wilcox.

In the foreign language department Adrian Llamas, sophomore, received the Outstanding Student Award from Mrs. Debbie Wilson and Morgan Peterson, junior, was named outstanding sign language student by Mrs. Summer Nixon. Mary Plecas presented the mathemath recognition to Denise Lau, sophmore, and Victoria Oliva. junior. Mrs. Rebecca Portnoy presented the music award to choir student Cassandra Rosales, sophormoe, and band student Jaimee Althouse, junior. Mr. William Keilty presented the award for physical education to sophomore Peter Le and junior Nathaniel Boggs. In Science Mrs. Susan Taudt awarded sophomore Isha Tripathi, and Mrs. Kira Grund awarded Kendra Rose Jucal. In social studies Mrs. Rhonda Bryan awarded sophomore, James Augustyn and junior, Brianna Rubalcava was awarded by Mrs. Mary Mckinley. In special programs, sophomore Ryan Martic was awarded by Mrs. Gail Sharp and junior Nicolas Bechtold was awarded by Carrie Pavalella. Finally in vocational technology, sophomore, Stephanie Garcia was awarded by Oscar Hernandez and junior Megan Lwe was awarded by Mr. Luis Felix.

Mrs. Jaime Bauer, activities director, recognized the current ASB officers and class presidents for all their hard work in her class.
